54 The Amazing Colca Canyon & Arequipa Admire the stunning scenery and marvel at the grand scale of mountainous Southern Peru, COLCA CANYON & SURROUNDS One of the deepest and most impressive canyons in the world, and home to the magnificent Andean Condor, southern Peru's Colca Canyon is a truly breathtaking natural attraction. Surrounding it, a unique range of ecological zones create a fascinating environment. Here, incredible stepped terraced fields of pre-Inca times are still maintained and cultivated for agriculture by the local people. The Colca Valley presents spectacular scenery and lush oasis areas that bring life to the region. THE ANDEAN CONDOR During your time in the Colca Canyon, you'll make your way to the viewpoint of Mirador Cruz del Condor. Here, you'll relish the opportunity to witness the magnificent Andean Condor at close range. Among the largest birds in the world that are able to fly, the Andean Condor prefers to live within windy mountainous regions where their enormous 3 metre wingspan benefits from the strong air currents. Watch as they soar high above the steep canyon walls on the warm thermal air, reaching as high as 1,200 metres above the canyon floor. COLCA LODGE HOT SPRINGS Whilst in Colca Canyon, why not bathe within idyllic slopes in naturally heated pools? Down in the valley, on the banks of the river, four pools are fed by natural springs, producing water at temperatures of up to 26 degrees celsius. Using locally sourced materials for its construction and carefully created to minimise interference with nature yet maintain a majestic ambience, these hot springs do not just promote relaxation, but are rich with minerals that are beneficial to health and well-being. 54 Main image: be inspired by stunning views at Colca Canyon – www.travelmarvel.com.au –
