ALLURING AREQUIPA
Surrounded by three imposing volcanoes,
Arequipa is Peru's second largest city at just
one-tenth the size of Lima. Known globally
as the 'White City', thanks to most Baroque
buildings constructed from sillar. This city's
picturesque World Heritage-listed centre is
home to many monumental buildings and more
than 64 acres of parks and gardens providing
the ideal place from which to absorb the
surrounding architecture.
YANAHUARA & EL MISTI
During your time in Arequipa, you'll enjoy a trip
to a superbly located viewpoint in the district of
Yanahuara. Well known for its sillar buildings,
built of pearly white volcanic rock, here you're
able to take in stunning views of the city set
against the backdrop of Peru's most known and
active volcano, El Misti. Formed some 14,000
years ago, its history of explosive eruptions
makes this majestic snow-capped stratovolcano
one of the worlds most dangerous volcanoes.
SANTA CATALINA CONVENT
Built in 1579, the Convent of Santa Catalina de
Siena served as a cloister for Dominican nuns
from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries.
Here, you'll enjoy a thorough guided tour of this
iconic 20,000 square metre complex built
entirely from volcanic sillar stone. Complete
with living quarters, a plaza, gallery and chapel,
your guide will recreate a sense of what life
was like as a nun within this historic convent.
