SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE TRUST SPIRIT HEADING SOUTH BY DEAN LAWRENCE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER T he 10 day Youth Development voyages, focusing on individual personal growth and development are the Spirit of Adventure Trust's best-known voyage, but the Trust also runs a number of other sailings. These two are in the three to five day bracket: THE TROPHY VOYAGES are aimed at a slightly younger age group: 14 to 15 year olds, or year 11 students. Unlike the 10 day voyages which have 40 individuals, Trophy voyages are for teams of 10 students from four schools, each with their own teacher. The team can be all boys, all girls, or a 50/50 split. Over the five day voyage, the four school teams compete against each other for the ultimate prize of the School Spirit Trophy for the voyage. Teachers coordinate and facilitate the activities, working with the Spirit's crews to deliver a full programme of activities that leave the students with little down time, and maximum fun! INSPIRATION VOYAGES are again, over five days, but this one is aimed at younger people (not adults), with physical disabilities. There are a wide range of disabilities that might include: loss of limb, loss of sight, hearing, and others. The one limiting factor is their ability to handle the stairs and accessways around the ship. However, teachers are not excused from the "chores" in running the ship, and they work alongside students in preparing meals, cleaning up, and the general daily upkeep of the ship including the infamous 0630 morning swim. The voyage objectives are: • Demonstrating the power of teamwork • Building self confidence • Encourage lateral thinking • Fair competition • Having fun The five day programme is based around the core fundamentals of personal growth and development with challenges similar to the 10 day youth development voyage. We do however restrict the numbers to 30 trainees, with a slightly wider age bracket of 16 to 20 years. We also need to have a higher crew/support level, and the remaining 10 spaces are taken up with the extra volunteers who assist. Each half day the teams nominate one of their members to be team leader. That person leads the team through their activities and in doing so, all team members have the opportunity to experience leadership as they guide the team through their various activities. The feedback from schools who participate has been very positive and the interest from schools is now greater than the number of sailings we currently offer. To ensure a fair SKIPPER SCHOLARSHIP In association with the Spirit of Adventure Trust, Professional Skipper magazine offers readers the opportunity to nominate young men and women for two introductory ten-day youth development voyage, that may lead to a Spirit cadetship for inshore masters qualifications. July/August 2012 Professional Skipper 65 No activities that are normally undertaken on the ship are excluded from the Inspiration programme. The 0630 swim does happen, as does the yard swing, climbing the rig to the top of the mast, and the chores on board the ship – sometimes it just takes a bit longer. The sense of achievement and growth these young people gain from the programme is huge, and we are indebted to the Karori Lions and Lions Clubs of New Zealand who fundraise for this voyage, significantly reducing the cost for those who attend.
