Boat people bandwagon PRIME MINISTER JOHN Key and Immigration Minister Nathan Guy announced changes under which asylum seekers who arrive illegally in a big group such as on a boat, would be immediately detained under a group warrant rather than individual warrants, which was at present the case. The new rules would apply to those who arrived in groups of 11 or more. There were no current plans to build detention centres like Australia's and it was likely they would be detained at the Devonport Naval Base while they were processed. The changes would mean boat people who arrived illegally but were later accepted as refugees would be treated less favourably than refugees who were accepted into New Zealand through the usual UNHCR process. Boat people would not get residency until their refugee status was reviewed after three years. They would only be allowed to sponsor immediate family members into New Zealand, rather than extended family - tighter rules which would not apply to refugees who arrived after UNHCR approval. Mr Guy said it would bring New Zealand systems for asylum seekers in line with Australia's. JET SKI CRASH A 13 YEAR old girl was injured in a head on collision between two jet skis in Maungatapu in May. The girl was thrown over the handle bars and into the water on the Rangataua Bay side of State Highway 29 from Maungatapu to Matapihi. The 13 year old was taken to Tauranga Hospital before being flown to Waikato Hospital in a serious but stable condition with a fractured arm, and possible abdominal injuries from the impact. She was wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident. Police are investigating the incident. Under Maritime New Zealand rules no person under the age of 15, "shall be in charge of, or propel or navigate, a power driven vessel that is capable of a proper speed exceeding 10 knots, unless he or she is under the direct supervision of a person over the age of 15 years old, who is in immediate reach of controls."
