spotlight website www.fastcompany.com Fast Company is the world's leading progressive business media brand, with a unique editorial focus on innovation in technology, ethonomics (ethical economics), leadership, and design. Written for, by, and about the most progressive business leaders, Fast Company and FastCompany.com inspire readers and users to think beyond traditional boundaries, lead conversations, and create the future of business. Launched in November 1995 by Alan Webber and Bill Taylor, two former Harvard Business Review editors, Fast Company magazine was founded on a single premise: A global revolution was changing business, and business was changing the world. Why are old technologies so hard to kill? In the physical world, lifespans are finite. The longer something has been alive, the closer it is to death, whether you're talking about your aunt or your dog or even your refrigerator or external hard drive. But when it comes to the realm of the nonphysical-things like ideas and technologies and other cultural products--is it possible that the opposite is true? That the longer something has been around, the longer we can expect it to be around in the future? Sales rose 0.3 per cent to $US16.5 billion in 2012, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which represents some 1,400 record companies worldwide. The growth may be modest, but for an industry that appeared to be in terminal decline as it also battled against rampant internet piracy, it was almost cause to break into song. Now the parent company has made it official. The New York Times Company have announced that the 125-year-old offshoot of the defunct New York Herald Tribune would be rechristened later this year as the International New York Times. ''The digital revolution has turned The New York Times from being a great American newspaper to becoming one of the world's best-known news providers,'' said New York Times Co chief executive Mark Thompson. ''We want to exploit that opportunity,'' said the former BBC boss, adding that a new website for international readers was in the pipeline. Huddled over laptops around common tables were co-workers from the 10 shared office spaces that have popped up in Sydney in the past five years. For a membership fee of about $150-a-month, co-workers can enjoy a desk in an open-plan office, wi-fi, kitchen and printing facilities, and access to meeting rooms and "break-out" spaces. Fortunately, a lack of motivation is a problem that's much easier to fix than a lack of funds. Unlike money, its supply depends only on you. Losing motivation is a problem most small-business owners grapple with during their careers. It commonly occurs in the early stages of starting a business, once the initial buzz has worn off and the reality of running a profitable operation sets in. Some ideas to keep motivated include: • Keeping a "vision board" of images that encapsulate your goals. • A daily reward system that gives you the incentive to work harder.
