096: health&wellbeing Groups in THERE ARE MANY BREAST CANCER ORGANISATIONS IN NEW ZEALAND PROVIDING AN EXTENSIVE RANGE OF SERVICES, SUPPORT, INFORMATION AND ENCOURAGEMENT FOR WOMEN (AND MEN) WHO ARE NEWLY DIAGNOSED, HAVING SURGERY OR TREATMENT, RECOVERING OR IN REMISSION. EVERYONE DIAGNOSED WITH BREAST CANCER WILL NEED SUPPORT – IT MUST BE AVAILABLE AT THE TIME OF DIAGNOSIS AND THROUGHOUT A JOURNEY WITH BREAST CANCER. 'SUPPORT' INCLUDES ADVICE, INFORMATION, THE PRESENTATION OF OPTIONS, EDUCATION, UPDATES, ENCOURAGEMENT AND POSITIVE MESSAGES. NZ DUE TO FEEDBACK, WE WILL continue to provide you with the contact details of these larger organisations, but it is also important to acknowledge those wonderful groups and fundraising initiatives set up to support local women. Breast cancer services in New Zealand are under-funded and under-resourced and that is why you will see constant fundraising activities in your town. Please support your local groups. The three major public fundraising initiatives are: The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation's Pink Ribbon Street Appeal in October (October is international breast cancer awareness month), the Breast Cancer Research Trust's (BCRT's) Glassons T-Shirt campaign and the Breast Cancer Aotearoa Coalition (BCAC) and Arnott's will be running a new campaign associated with the Tim Tam brand in May 2013. The AUSTRALIA & NEW ZEALAND BREAST CANCER TRIALS GROUP has, for more than 30 years, conducted a breast cancer clinical trials research programme for the treatment, prevention and cure of breast cancer. The research programme involves multi-centre national and international clinical trials and brings together over 600 researchers in 80 institutions throughout Australia and New Zealand. Working together, resources are pooled so that answers to important research questions can be made sooner, and with greater scientific integrity for the benefit of women. More than 13,500 women have participated in ANZBCTG clinical trials. New Zealand's main Oncology centres are participating centres for clinical trials coordinated through this group. The ANZBCTG works collaboratively with other international breast cancer research groups. www.anzbctg.org BREAST CANCER AOTEAROA COALITION (BCAC) is run by breast cancer survivors and is an umbrella organisation representing more than 30 breast cancer-related groups. It provides a united voice for New Zealand women who have experienced breast cancer and strives to make world-class detection, treatment and care accessible to all those affected by breast cancer in New Zealand. BCAC supports those newly diagnosed with breast cancer by offering the Step by Step resource pack, which provides information, resources, insights and practical tips to help women make well-informed treatment decisions and access the support available in their local communities. In addition, BCAC's website provides comprehensive local information, advice and support along with Kiwi Stories of Breast Cancer, a series of web videos featuring men and women talking candidly about diagnosis, treatment and recovery from breast cancer. BCAC is committed to providing information, support and representation so that women with breast cancer are empowered to make informed choices about their treatment and care. Ongoing local research into the causes of our critical breast cancer rates in New Zealand is essential to reduce the death rate. The BREAST CANCER RESEARCH TRUST proactively addresses the huge problem of breast cancer in this country, and by funding and undertaking research projects it endeavours to find a cure by 2018 with various research initiatives in place now, and being planned for the future. www.breastcancercure.org.nz 0800 227 828 BREASTSCREEN AOTEAROA – THE NATIONAL BREAST SCREENING PROGRAMME aims to reduce deaths from breast cancer among New Zealand women by detecting cancers when they are small. The programme offers free screening mammograms to women aged 45 – 69 who have no symptoms of breast cancer, have not been diagnosed with breast cancer in the last five years and are eligible for free health care in New Zealand.. Screening is carried out every two years using two x-ray views of each breast to ensure the most accurate results are obtained. If something suspicious is found on a mammogram, women are referred to special assessment teams for diagnosis. The CANCER SOCIETY OF NEW ZEALAND is dedicated to reducing the incidence of cancer and ensuring the best cancer care for everyone in New Zealand. The Cancer Society is a leading cancer patient advocate, providing a voice on all kinds of issues, including cancer detection and treatment. There is a National office located in Wellington, six regional offices and 15 centres all providing a range of local support services. www.cancernz.org.nz CANCER TRIALS NEW ZEALAND was established in 2003 to assist scientists, doctors and researchers to design and conduct cancer clinical trials with particular relevance to New Zealanders. LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER is a free service offered to women undergoing treatment for cancer. The aim of this service is to help restore and enhance the appearance of cancer patients during and after treatment.
