Claudia Batten Co-Founder Victors and Spoils and Massive Inc What was the smartest decision you made in the last year? I think the best decision was leaving Victors & Spoils, the company I cofounded in 2009. Not because I left but more because I realized that I had done what I set out to do and it was time for me to move on. I am a huge fan of Simon Sinek and his words constantly ring in my ears why do you get out of bed in the morning?. It can be a hard question to answer sometimes, for individuals and organizations. I realized I was an entrepreneur and an adventurer and I needed to find a new mountain to climb. Metaphorically speaking of course, I have been somewhat glued to my laptop despite some very beautiful, beckoning mountains out my window. What, if any, unfinished business do you have going into 2013? Isnt there always something? I seem incapable of rest, its definitely something I work at but seem to excel at setting somewhat ridiculous expectations on myself. So every year I feel a desire to do more but my new philosophy is to not be busy. What major indulgence are you willing to experience in 2013? I have recently started meditating after literal years of resisting it. I am a pretty committed yogi and have for many years conned myself into thinking yoga is my meditation, but I knew I was full of shit. I have finally given myself the room/time to be able to make meditation part of my life. Its really freaking hard. What would you most like to change about yourself in 2013? To stop buying books that I dont have time to read and then feeling guilty that I havent read them. Does that count? I think the biggest change I would make is to stop the obsessing on how we should change crap that most of the magazine industry is propped up on and a solid chunk of the non-fiction book business Her magazine excepted of course. My mantra is be the best, bravest, boldest version of yourself that you can be. Keep improving, keep reaching, keep striving but you dont need to change. What are your New Year's resolutions for 2013? I tend not to make them because I never keep them. I so have zero self-discipline, its a problem. Maybe that is something I should change but screw it, its way too much fun the other way. But I will say that one of the rituals I have had every year is to sit down and think about what I want my life to look like. Write it out and write out some of the intentions I have for the year. What are my focus areas? I find that level of intentionality really helps me set a tone for the year rather than a list of I musts because we all know they are not going to happen. 2013 for me is about change, so my intentions will be around the big shifts I have coming and how I manage them elegantly, purposefully and fabulously. Because a life not lived fabulously is a life not worth living. Michele ACourt Comedienne What has been your high point for 2012? Performing at the Laugh Factory in Las Vegas and being invited back to do a two-week season in 2013. It felt good to wow them in a town that is pretty much built on "wow". What was the smartest decision you made in the last year? To get serious about making some lifestyle changes - lose some weight, do some yoga, work overseas, and stop waiting to "get around to it later". What, if any, unfinished business do you have going into 2013? I've started writing a brand new show - my first solo show in seven years for the NZ Comedy Festival in May. It terrifies and thrills me. What was the biggest risk you took in the last 12 months? Stepping on stage in San Francisco, Vancouver, Toronto and Las Vegas to see if what I do is funny on the other side of the world. What major indulgence are you willing to experience in 2013? Fried chicken, jambalaya and jazz in New Orleans. What would you most like to change about yourself in 2013? Taller? What are your New Year's resolutions for 2013? To set aside one day a week for reading and dreaming, and talking only to the people in the room - and to fill that room with good people. www.h e rmagaz in e .co.n z | 21
