:slow art Good things take time so if youre looking for a quick thrill, architecture may not be for you GAUDIS EXTRAORDINARY SAGRADA FAMILIA rising above the Barcelona skyline epitomises architecture at its finest. The cave-like basilica, which began construction in 1883, has cemented itself as one of the worlds greatest structures with its complex and unique (to say the least) spirals and faades. So what does it take to solidify ones designs in the history books as an iconic member of architecture for centuries to come? While having grand ideas for construction is admirable, architecture requires a high level of perseverance to see a project through from start to finish. It also requires understanding of structural practices to ensure your building doesnt blow over on the first windy day. And most importantly, you need a dedicated team to make your vision a reality. When Gaudi died in 1926, his masterpiece was only 15-25 percent complete and with a projected completion date of 2028 countless people will have contributed to Sagrada Familia. Perhaps therein lies the secret good things take time. Gaudi famously commented my client is in no hurry however architects in todays market have a great deal of pressure to complete projects in a timely manner. I not only found that it was right for me, it was also a way of giving people in my community better, inexpensive places to live. The greatest challenge for designing for environmental sustainability is trying to implement buildings into nature because sometimes architecture and nature, as much as you want it to, will not match. Specialising in quality, bespoke residential architecture, Fraser Architecture Ltd aspires to create liveable, beautiful homes.
