Silvertip keeps Millennium Cup ONE OF THE smallest yachts in the fleet has won the 2012 New Zealand Millennium Cup held on Auckland's Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf from February 16-18. The 33.8m sloop Silvertip, built by Yachting Developments in 2001, was clearly the quickest in the uncharacteristically light airs. Sailing mainly gentle sea breezes, she won both races on Friday, came second in Thursday's first race, and was leading in the fourth and final race when the fleet sailed into a windless hole with only half of the race completed after three hours, and the race was abandoned. Silvertip is the reigning NZ Millennium Cup champion. The cup is the premier event for superyachts in the South Pacific with owners, crew and sponsors enjoying two informal post- race evenings and a gala prizegiving dinner. It was first held in Auckland in 2000 between the Louis Vuitton Cup final and the start of the America's Cup match. MINOR TSUNAMI A MINOR TSUNAMI hit Japan's north eastern coastline on March 14 after a strong earthquake rocked the region. The 100mm wave accompanied a 6.8 magnitude quake which struck some 210km off the northern island of Hokkaido, prompting local authorities to issue an evacuation warning for coastal residents. Japan's meteorological agency said initially that the tsunami could be as high as 500mm but United States monitors said there was no Pacific-wide tsunami threat. The warning comes after a level nine-magnitude earthquake triggered a monster tsunami on March 11 last year that killed more than 19,000 people and crippled Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant, sparking the world's worst atomic accident in a generation.
