SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE TRUST SPIRIT HEADING SOUTH BY DEAN LAWRENCE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
A
s this publication reaches readers the sailing schedule for the Spirit of New Zealand for 2013 will have been published.
The exciting news is we are heading south early in 2013 after a long absence from southern waters. This will coincide with our 40th anniversary celebrations and it is our intention to visit as many of the major ports as possible. Napier, Wellington, Lyttleton, Dunedin, Bluff and New Plymouth are proposed ports, with others being added as time allows to enable more people to see the ship. We hope to be taking 10-day Youth Voyages to Stewart Island, around into Fiordland, then up the West Coast of the South Island. Past trainees will have the chance to get back on board with a couple of three-day Adult Coastal Voyages scheduled as part of the 40th anniversary sail. Spaces are open to the public as well, so keep an eye on our website for the schedule and make your bookings early.
Coming up in 2013 and 2014 the Spirit of New Zealand is hoping to transit the Tasman to visit Hobart and then on to Sydney to participate in a Tall Ships event in 2013 and 2014. Tall Ships visiting Sydney from the northern hemispere may also stop over in Auckland, including the Jubilee Sailing Trust's Lord Nelson. The Lord Nelson is set up to accommodate

trainees with significant disabilities including some who need wheelchairs, and we are hoping the Lord Nelson will stay in New Zealand waters and take voyages for both able-bodied and physically challenged young sailors here. The Spirit of New Zealand recently dropped in to Tutukaka Harbour during voyage 616. We hadn't visited the Tutukaka community for a number of years so it was great to get back there. Conditions were a fresh easterly, giving trainees an appreciation of entering and leaving the narrow entrance of Tutukaka Harbour entrance in brisk conditions! The local community came out in force to visit the ship during the afternoon and trainees did a beach clean as part of our environmental programme. Voyage 616 also had the honour of sailing in the Auckland Anniversary Day regatta. When you consider the 40 trainees had only joined the day before, and were operating the ship with full sail, in a congested harbour, it was no mean feat, and as Spirit tacked around HMNZS Otago, she looked quite spectacular. Demand for spaces on the Spirit of New Zealand ensures we have a small waiting list, so if you know of a young 15 to 18 year old who would enjoy the benefits of our internationally recognised Youth Development programme, get those applications in early and we will do our best to ensure you get a berth allocation.
