CREW VOLUNTEERS WANTED
Help keep the call of the by-gone era of steam alive. We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers, men and women, to join our crew so the old hands may pass the skills of yesteryear to the next generation of guardians of our heritage steam tug William C Daldy. No experience necessary.
Are you interested in working boilers, steam engines or just being on deck to learn new skills or refresh the old, be it steam, engineering or seamanship? Do you enjoy making new friends and the camaraderie of the sea? If you answer yes, then please contact:
Alex Franklin, 027 568 8623 or Bevan Tinker, 021 801 402 Towing post Little Toot underway
pull of 380 kilos. There is a 120 litre fuel tank with the motor using three litres/hr at six knots.
The solid towing post is mounted centrally just behind the motor just aft of the turning pivot point where it should be for maximum pull and freedom of movement and control of the tow. This was put to good use when Little Toot was used to provide support in the Fife regatta in Scotland in 2008, towing the yachts to and from the racecourse.
The outside of the wheelhouse is finished with a traditional T&G look, as has the top of the tumble down aft deck which has also been caulked. The detail and quality of the workmanship that has gone into the vessel is amazing, and it's all from idle hands that stayed out of the pub. Added things like the 10 gauge starter's cannon mounted starboard aft on the combing all reinforce the fact that this story had to be told. Little Toot is transported on her own trailer and is now back in her home port of Nelson, where she won the Jens Hansen Cup for best overall vessel at the annual New Zealand Antique and Classic Boat Show on her first outing. Finally, it is great to see that dreams are alive and well in the marine industry, proving you only have to follow the dream.
