Les Clefs d'Or - Crowne Plaza Queenstown Fiona Lawson… My first real job was as a land girl so I'm very used to, and capable of, getting my hands dirty. The job involved swinging hay bales, mustering up sheep and breaking in horses, all in the high country of the South Island – a part of the country that literally took my breath away; from hard work and extreme beauty of landscape. I moved into hospitality 25 years ago. I was part of the opening crew of the Park Royal Hotel Christchurch – the biggest 'international' hotel to be built in the South Island. I worked as a kitchen porter and gained chefs qualifications, then spent five years travelling and experiencing how the rest of the world lived and travelled. Upon returning to Christchurch I was part of the opening crew for the Centra (now Holiday Inn City Centre) where a position was made for me to be a concierge. I was at the Centra for six years then I moved to be concierge at the Park Royal (Crowne Plaza Christchurch). I was then invested into the society of Les Clefs d'Or in May 2004. In January 2005 I married Maurice. Intending to be in Crusader country and at the Crowne Plaza until retirement mother nature decided otherwise and I have moved to Queenstown to embrace the Queenstown culture. Always one to look on the bright side I appreciate that this move has enabled me to fully experience the two strong destinations in which Les Clefs d'Or is represented. I have lived and worked in both members regions of the South Island. I will also be keeping my networks open in Christchurch as it rebuilds itself. I am fully supported by my hotel, Crowne Plaza Queenstown as we gear up for the 2013 congress. While at the World Congress in Toronto in April I was inspired by our new UICH President, Virginia Casale who said, "May this also stimulate more women to step forward in Clefs d'Or Society. Remember ladies, my presidency is dedicated to you and your contributions are needed in UICH". Virginia has now set a standard for me, and working with everyone in our society by showing we care and aiming higher we will bring on the best world congress in 2013 for professional concierges in the Les Clefs d'Or Society. At the recent Les Clefs d'Or AGM held in Auckland I was voted by my peers to be a South Island delegate, representing the South Island and in particular Christchurch and Queenstown. www.crowneplazaqueenstown.co.nz
