her beauty SUMMER HEAT If the sun is out then so are you... sound familiar? Before you do real damage take our expert advice this summer Summer Hair Care Here comes the beginning of summer. Usually we are so concerned with packing the correct SPF and skin care for our holiday that we completely forget to protect our hair. The worst thing about this is that hair is just as susceptible to sun damage as our skin. To keep your hair shining and healthy this summer, follow these simple rules: Don't dye your hair – before your summer holiday because the chlorine and sea salt may change your colour. Hair dying can make your hair vulnerable to the sun. But if you really have to dye it, do it at least 10 days before your summer holiday. Replace your usual hair products – The sun's UV rays and the beach winds can cause split ends to travel up the hair shaft, causing a fracture in the hair. Opt for products containing UV filters to help protect your hair. Condition – slick your hair back into a bun or ponytail, slather on some deep conditioner and enjoy a short spurt of sun time without worrying about sun damage to your hair. Minimize your hair's exposure to the sun – between 10.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. is when the sun's rays are the most potent. If you must be out during these times wear a cover-up or hat to shield your strands from sun exposure. Start the summer season with a salon trip to eliminate split ends and handle hair repairs. If your hair normally dries out during the summer months, consider having a preventive professional deep conditioning treatment to ward off potential frizzes. 114 | December/January 2012 | HER MAGAZINE
