her business network meetings Albany Janene Draper co-founded Farro Fresh Food Ltd with husband, James Draper. Their first concept store opened five years ago in Mt Wellington with just 16 staff. Janene originally trained as an optometrist, but having a total love of food she decided to follow her passion. Today Farro Fresh has three stores and 180 staff. Janene spoke to the Albany meeting attendees on Monday, 31 October and was very interesting, had great passion for her business and a willingness to share the good and bad, which was of most interest to the audience. The evening went very well, lots of networking and interesting women. The atmosphere was very open and friendly. Hayes Knight were fantastic hosts and the venue was great. Auckland Central On 19 September, 2011 Auckland Central Her Network attendees gathered at Rydges Hotel to hear Emma Hill speak about her journey so far with Michael Hill Jewellers. I think that we would agree that we were looking forward to hearing Emma Hill speak at this months gathering. There would not be household that has not heard the words "Michael Hill Jeweller". Emma gave an interesting presentation about her journey from a child helping Dad at the Whangarei store to now being a key member of the Michael Hill Empire. Emma was the lead in establishing new stores in Canada and the USA. Her key message was to set a goal – their 20 year goal set in 2002 was to have 1000 stores worldwide by the year 2022. She also stressed that her parents always stood by their saying that 'you have to work for what you want', and Emma has certainly done that. She worked to be able to put herself through university and through an MBA, which she passed with honours. She applied for three roles within the group before she was appointed to her current role. Emma was very down to earth and was a delight to host our lunch. Dunedin October's event was hosted by Anderson Lloyd Lawyers, and introduced Sarah Girvan from Immersion Marketing Limited to our Dunedin Network. Sarah entertained the group with her experiences from her rebellious teenage years as a 'Bogan' through to her marketing roles with well-respected national and international brands, which helped transform her into the successful businesswoman she is today. After a number of years working for corporates in Australia, she returned to New Zealand to set up her own business venture, Immersion Marketing Limited. While she started the business on her own a few years ago, Sarah has made significant progress with her own growth strategy. She now leads a team of specialists offering a wide range of tailored marketing, design and brand management solutions for all types of businesses; from small teams to multinational organisations. Her 'out of the box' approach has resulted in her business quickly demonstrating itself as a provider of choice in the New Zealand market. Sarah shared with the group a number of lessons that evolved from her own experiences and skills that have led to the success she is today. Her talk was inspiring, and she shared with us the personal and business challenges in her life that have contributed to the courage, confidence, and 'can do' attitude she now demonstrates as a professional businesswoman.
