34 | Viking Explorer Society News C I T Y G U I D E 34 | Viking Explorer Society News Greece's iconic capital is bursting with ancient history, remarkable culture and exquisite gastronomy that will make any visit truly memorable. City guide ATHENS As one of the world's oldest cities, with a history spanning more than 3,400 years, it's little wonder Athens tops many travellers' wish lists. This is the birthplace of democracy and the home of celebrated philosophers Plato and Socrates. Here you will find breathtaking landmarks that date back to the 5th-century BC, fascinating museums and mouth-watering food. According to Greek mythology, Athens was named after a dispute between Athena and Poseidon over who would become the city's patron. It is said that Poseidon gifted the residents a spring with seawater while Athena offered an olive tree. The people of Athens chose Athena as their protector, as the olive tree would give them food, oil and firewood, while the water from Poseidon tasted salty. Thus, the city was named after the goddess of wisdom and courage. Must‑sees A fantastic starting point to soak up the city's ancient history is the legendary Acropolis. The area is home to several important buildings, which include the Parthenon, built by Ictinus and constructed using white marble. The small temple of Athena Nike is the first Ionic structure to be built at the Acropolis. The Erechtheon, designed by Mnesikles, and the Propylaea, the monumental entrance leading to the complex, are two other notable structures. There are also stunningly carved statues, beautiful columns and ancient temples of worship located throughout this UNESCO-listed hilltop citadel. Once you get to the base of the Acropolis, take time to explore the bustling Plaka District. Located between Syntagma and Monastiraki, meander its narrow cobblestone lanes while marveling at the neoclassical buildings, Byzantine churches, terrace cafés, family-run tavernas and quirky souvenir shops around every corner. Colourful Plaka is also known as the "neighbourhood of the gods," due to the number of ancient Greek monuments found here. All the buildings in this historic area are listed, meaning not much has changed in the past century, which lends to the feeling of genuine authenticity in this treasured neighbourhood. Another highlight includes Syntagma Square, located in the centre of the city. Here you will find the grand Hellenic Parliament building, which was originally built as a royal palace by Greece's first monarch, King Otto. If you time it right, you can also witness the Changing of the Guard, performed by the soldiers of the former royal bodyguard. The elaborate ceremony of guards takes place every hour.
