VOYAGE
GETTING THERE: Consider our 15-day
Ancient Adriatic Treasures itinerary,
from Rome to Athens or in reverse.
Clockwise,
from top left: Plaka District and the
Acropolis; Athens Central Market; Acropolis,
Athens; cafés along the cobblestone streets
Shopping
Athens Central Market is the liveliest market
in the city. Here you can buy fresh produce
and sample local delicacies at its many indoor
restaurants. If you are visiting on a Sunday,
explore Monastiraki Flea Market, a busy
outdoor shopping area with stalls selling
books, second-hand vinyl, art and souvenirs.
The surrounding neighborhood also has
many antique shops to browse.
Gastronomy
Athens's reputation as a culinary destination
is well deserved. There is a wealth of options
to entice your palate, from modern Greek fare
at Michelin-star establishments to traditional,
family-run eateries. For a quick bite, be sure to
try the ever-popular souvlaki (grilled cubes of
chicken, pork or beef on a stick) and gyros
with pork wrapped in a pita and topped with
tzatziki, tomatoes, onions and fries—delicious.
