For owner and manager Michelle Maitland, it is all about
assisting businesses and entrepreneurs trying to get
ahead in difficult financial times - and helping to keep
New Zealand clean and green.
"Previously these companies would look at disposing
rather than recycling their used office furniture due to the
logistics, storage and time required," she says.
Maitland has built her business skills from her early
days running a market stall to using her life savings
to buy George Walkers. Along the way she became
a licensed auctioneer and ran live weekly auctions at
George Walkers before moving the business online and
then expanding the retail side. Today, Maitland uses her
auctioneer skills to help charities raise funds.
Looking for ways to expand her business and grow her
skills, Maitland set herself the goal of making George
Walkers the largest used-office furniture business in
New Zealand, a target she reached in 2010. For the last
two years, the company has also been a finalist in the
Auckland West and Auckland Central business awards.
