Let your creative juices flow What started as documentation for one film maker turned to into a lifelong journey of education Angela Osborne was born and raised in Auckland and worked in wine retail whilst studying Film and Television at the University of Auckland. Following graduation, she was helped by a friend to get a harvest job in a winery in California, and left New Zealand for an intended three months mid-2002. Landing in Sonoma County, she had no idea that this harvest would change her path so drastically from the intended Documentary production. She has focused on wine ever since. In 2003, Angela moved to London to learn how to sell wine ("intrinsic in any winemaking dream"), and worked as a wine rep for three years there. In 2006, she moved back to California to embark on her own label. A Tribute to Grace Wine Company was established in 2007 ~ named after Angela's Grandmother, Grace ~ and has now grown to nearly 1000 cases. Angela focuses entirely on Grenache and currently makes four single-vineyard wines from three different regions in California. She leases all of her fruit and has it farmed according to her organic principles. She leases a "corner of a winery" in Los Alamos, the town where she lives with her husband Jason, and makes her wine "the old way ~ foot treading, native fermentation, whole cluster, lots of intention..." Angela and her winemaking have featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, the LA Times, Decanter Magazine, Cuisine Magazine and the Sunday Star Times. Her wine is regarded by many as "the best Grenache in California". www.gracewinecompany.com Angela's top 10 tips for creating a successful product and marketing it overseas 1. Do what you love, this will show in every step of whatever you make. 2. Question, question, question. There is always more to learn, and advice is a gift to treasure. 3. Be humble and gracious, and write thank-you notes. 4. The kiwi spirit is as resilient as the day is long! Channel this. 5. Find an amazing designer to help with the packaging (www.peggysueproject.com) 6. Honesty and integrity - two more traits I thank New Zealand for - always honor your word. 7. Write a business plan (I never did, but it would have saved me many rice-and-bean meals). 8. Tell your story to all you meet. It is amazing how people cherish entrepreneurship ~ and people love helping people (especially kiwis). 9. Find a business mentor. 10. Always budget for trips home to revive the soul (I wish I had done this too, a thousand thank you's to my Mum for being my homecoming savior). Angela's top 5 picks for indulgent wines Eric Texier Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc This was our wedding wine; an incredible white CDP from the godfather of natural winemaking in the Rhône. A treat, and I dream of having it with fresh scallops from home. Château Rayas Birth-of-the-first-child wine - which we will celebrate in July. This is my Grenache inspiration: whole cluster, ethereal, seductive spice and a peace that will inspire any yoga class. A Tribute to Grace Grenache 2010 My current favourite of the Graces... (they change often). This is our sacred wine for any family time, or celebration of Nana's grace and the grace wine can bring; lots of carbonic spice, gypsy spirit and a reminder of the miracle of manifesting. Millton Vineyards, Clos de Ste. Anne Pinot Noir One of my very favourite wines from home, James Millton introduced me to Steiner's BD philosophies many years ago, and his wines have such an incredible life-force about them. And we can buy them here, if we search long and hard. Pyramid Valley Earth Smoke Pinot Noir Another favourite from the homeland, Mike Weersing de-stems with chicken wire and all is natively profound. His Pinot Noirs are incredible ~ and his Semillon is truly other-worldly, though rare as hen's teeth in these parts. ww w.h e rmagaz in e .co.n z | 97
