Maytime,, Mallie Lantern Interiors designed by Emily tend to be layered using colour, textures, patterns and different styles so that they are more than just one dimensional and they invite living. Emily lives by the adages: An object must be beautiful, useful or loved and more is more... however, Emily is also sensitive to the budget that is set and will work to achieve the desired end result within whatever constraints are made, and without sacrificing the smaller details or quality. I saw the opportunity, through the process that we went through, to introduce further structure as far as a more collaborative approach through better communication with the builder and architect, thus bringing another level of professionalism to the process. Emilys experience comes from an education in architecture followed by nine years working in interior design at a high-end interior design studio, a commercial architectural and interiors office, and working for herself before finally joining Trinity. I worked for myself completing contracts for friends and family for 12 months. When the opportunity to work for Trinity came up I took it. Being part of the team at Trinity I can focus more on design, which I enjoy, and less on the business side of things. That is taken care of by Nicole McKenzie, Director of Trinity Design. Prior to purchasing Trinity in 2006, Nicole built her career over 20 years in various sales and marketing roles finishing as a CEO Mamasita Chair Retro chic. An adaptation of the Acapulco chair designed in Mexico in the 1950s, using mayan woven hammock techniques. Made from woven UV filtered PVC cord on zinc coated recycled steel frames. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use $499 RRP www.mamasita.co.nz within a successful New Zealand owned IT company. In 2001, the Auckland based corporate had a house designed and built and engaged Trinity as her interior designer to help with the finishing touches. We didnt want a whole lot of options presented to us. We were clear about what we liked and they nailed it right away. It was great to work with someone we could trust, says Nicole. She quickly became friends with the then designer and owner to the point that, five years down in the track in 2006 when the business was for sale Nicole was able to take over ownership of Trinity. I had always had a passion for design and architecture but knew my strengths werent in being a designer. I saw the opportunity, through the process that we went through, to introduce further structure as far as a more collaborative approach through better communication with the builder and architect, thus bringing another level of professionalism to the process. Nicole ensures her team stay abreast of all the latest products and designs being introduced into the New Zealand market as well as locally produced designs. In our studio we house a comprehensive catalogue of products that suppliers update regularly and every week we also take the opportunity to attend new product launch presentations. Nicole has developed a knack for employing a great team to surround her. No matter what industry youre in, she explains, there are key traits and skills that are desirable. Firstly, you select people who will work in well within the culture you have created. They also need to align with your philosophy for the business. Although made up of qualified and talented individuals, Trinity is about the brand so designers need to be able to put their own preferences aside for the clients benefit. Were not living or working in the space at the end of the day the client is. So it is essential that we meet the brief given in all aspects that makes for a successful outcome for everyone. www.trinityinteriordesign.co.nz www.h e rmagaz in e .co.n z | 73
