MASTER CLASS:PR 101 PR 101{ WHAT IS PR? WHAT DO I DO WITH IT? Public relations or 'PR' is just that … relations or information for the public or more specifically, potential customers. WHY? $$ Because talking = profile, and profile = more feet in the door, and more feet in the door = money, money, MONEY. POWER IS IN THE PITCH It is your aim as a business owner to get your PR in front of journalists, bloggers and other 'info sharing' individuals, but more importantly to get them talking about it. PR is a great tool to use in the media to share your business's accomplishments and news with a far reaching audience. The key is determining what is news … and how to tell people so they'll listen! I THINK MY NEWS IS INTERESTING, BUT HOW WILL I KNOW IF OTHERS WILL TOO? It's hard to be impartial when upgrading computer programmes is a big achievement for your growing business. Try this test: If you have a company Facebook page (which you should all have by now) write a short post about your news. If you get more than 5% of your total 'friends' database liking or commenting then you're on to something good. To find YOUR story, think about these things: • Is the way you run your business different from other companies? • • JUST CALL AND SAY 'WRITE ABOUT ME'? SO WHAT, DO I Pretty much. But the power is in the pitch. While most prefer the safety and ease of email, if you really want to get noticed you'll need to get your thinking cap on and come up with an in- your-face (but not too intrusive) way of grabbing those decision makers' attention. If your news is really important, e.g., you discover the cure to cancer, go straight to the news stations as you'll want to get the message to the greatest audience as quickly as possible. • • • • • • • • • Have you created something that is the first of its type? Are you helping people make or save money? Is there an angle that suits the economic times? Have you given an old idea a modern twist? Is there a green/recycling/organic message? Can people improve an aspect of their lives by using your products? Is there an interesting international angle? Does the founder have an interesting life story? Are there any celebrities (local or international) involved or customers who can share their success stories? Is your product or service going to improve the lives of children? Is there an educational angle? HOW DO I KNOW WHO MY TARGET MARKET IS? Identifying your target market is crucial to finding success. You want to know exactly what kind of people will buy your products or use your services. Are you trying to reach other businesses, celebrities, mums, sport enthusiasts, or 'greenies'? Once you have determined your target audience then ask yourself what magazines do they read or TV programmes they watch? Are they on parenting websites, reading fashion magazines, or surfing the web? Knowing how your target audience consumes media is important to reach them. 50 | www.hermagazine.co.nz { DATABASE LIKING OR COMMENTING THEN YOU'RE ON TO IF YOU GET MORE THAN 5% OF YOUR TOTAL 'FRIENDS' SOMETHING GOOD { { {
