164 | WILDERNESS LODGE EXTENSIONS HUDSON BAY ODYSSEY 7 DAYS – WILDERNESS LODGE EXTENSION 2 Nights Winnipeg | 4 Nights Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge Day 1. Arrive Winnipeg. Arrive in Winnipeg where you'll meet your fellow travellers and your guide. Stay: Winnipeg, The Grand Winnipeg Airport Hotel by Lakeview. D Day 2. Winnipeg, Churchill, Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge. Your epic journey into the heart of remote polar bear country begins as you fly to Churchill. Here, transfer to a private plane and enjoy a one-hour flight north to Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge, one of the most isolated lodges on the Hudson Bay coast within a region home to the world's largest polar bear population. In the summer when the sea ice on Hudson Bay retreats and melts, the bears head for the shore and spend their days living off fat stores on the quiet tundra. When the bay freezes over once again, usually close to autumn, they head out onto the ice on the hunt for their favourite meal – ringed seal. Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge is set directly opposite the prime polar bear denning region of Hudson Bay, so you may be lucky enough to see mothers with their cubs. On arrival, you'll be greeted by your friendly lodge hosts who will show you around the lodge and its fenced grounds. After a bountiful lunch, head out on the Palsa Bogs and Tundra Ponds for an interpretive walk, keeping your eyes peeled for the 'Great Ice Bear' of course. Back at the lodge, appetisers and cocktails will then be served before dinner and an informative lecture presented by one of your guides. Be sure to get some rest this evening as you've three action-packed days ahead of you. Four Night Stay: Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge. LD Days 3 to 5. Nature Trekking, Polar Bears and Wildlife. Fill up on breakfast each morning then head out to the nearby lookouts in search of polar bears with their cubs. Feel the anticipation of impending encounters as you embark on Churchill's signature ground-level walking tours through an area of Arctic Canada where polar bears roam, wild and free. Unlike other operators, when you're exploring with Churchill Wild, there's no glass, no fences, just you and these majestic creatures, face- to-face. Polar bear expeditions may take place close to the lodge, in the immediate vicinity or even further out on ATV day trips along the tundra. If you want to take some time out, there's also the opportunity to stay behind and curl up by the fire, or take photographs of the wildlife around the lodge. This time of year also coincides with the migration of Arctic nesting birds, so you can spot flocks of fascinating birds as they start their journey south to their winter homes. Wolves, black bears and moose also congregate close by the lodge where the thick boreal forest meets the tundra. Drinks, appetisers and delectable dinners are served every night, and many evenings present the chance to watch the phenomenal light displays of the Aurora Borealis. The lodge staff will monitor the conditions and provide wake-up calls so you won't miss any chances to take in this incredible light display. BLD Day 6. Churchill, Winnipeg.
