Lighten Up Outdoor garden lighting doesn't just need to be for security reasons, use it to highlight and play up your best landscape and architectural features. If you have a running water feature, try placing them facing in towards the water and the reflections from this should light up some of the surrounding area for a tranquil look. The right placement of lighting can really set the mood for outdoor entertaining and is a great addition to your garden. Herbs over Winter If you'd like fresh herbs year round, Veggie Prep Now's a good time to start planting silverbeet, broccoli, cabbage, turnips and spinach. Silverbeet, turnips and spinach can all be sown straight into the garden. Cabbage and broccoli should be grown in seed trays for 4-6 weeks before planting. Be sure to water regularly until the temperature becomes a bit cooler, as they don't like getting too hot and dry. you can always pot a few and bring them indoors. Chives, thyme, mint and lavender all make this transition well – again do this before the first frost and choose the best looking plants, being careful to keep the roots as intact as possible. Making Pesto Making pesto is a great and delicious way to use up any left over basil you have. Put the leaves as well as some parmesan cheese, garlic and pine nuts (or walnuts) into the blender, process then add some olive oil before processing again. Try toasting the pine nuts first for a nuttier, richer flavour. HER MAGAZINE | February/March 2012 | 113
