her last word abhowout... by Jane Hunter Thirty something years ago Hunter's Wines was established in Marlborough by Ernie and Jane Hunter. Today Jane Hunter continues Ernie's legacy and dream with Hunter's Wines – a fiercely independent, family-owned winery. Jane is an internationally respected vintner and recipient of the prestigious UK Women in Wine Award and has an OBE. Exactly 25 years after taking over managing Hunter's Wines Jane was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to viticulture. In 2010 Jane was named as the K.E.A World Class New Zealand award recipient. …a bit of sparkle. My mother lives in Italy (B&B) so I suppose you could say 'sparkle' was imprinted in my DNA – today my favourite piece of jewellery is a ring I bought in Cape Town, South Africa, I couldn't decide which colour stone to have so it's multi-coloured! Having a bit of sparkle in your life is almost compulsory whether it be your favourite piece of jewellery or a glass of Hunter's award winning Miru MiruTM NV Sparkling! www.hunters.co.nz www.cottage-umbria.com …escaping in disguise. Clad in gumboots, wide-brimmed hat with ripped jeans and an old polo, I love escaping down the back of the winery to my vegie garden, taking out any frustrations on the weeds before picking any fresh produce for dinner, and jumping in the old bomb (Suzuki 4WD) and getting back to grass roots, soaking in the serenity of cruising around the vineyards! Everyone needs a place to go that's close to home yet you feel so far away. Where's your favourite place? …not just a winery. Hunter's award winning wines are obviously a huge part of day-to-day life at Hunter's in Marlborough, but alongside the wines we have an award winning native garden, art and sculptures and our lovely café. This all ties back into our ongoing sponsorship of Hunter's Garden Marlborough, which brings hundreds of visitors to Marlborough for a week of events in November. www.gardenmarlborough.com …being remotely connected. Keeping up with technology can be a challenge, but being away from the action can be just as challenging when you're so passionate about what you are doing! Using facebook, twitter and my blackberry means I am never far away from the action –of course not without the help of the younger generation, my nephews James and Edward. www.facebook.com …faithful companions. Isabella is my adorable cat from the SPCA in Marlborough – Naughty Torty is her nickname and she keeps Graeme (my partner) and I amused with all sorts of antics! Faithful companions never ask too much of you. I am a patron of the Marlborough SPCA – a not for profit organisation I am very proud to be a part of. www.marlboroughspca.co.nz …visiting home. With family in various parts of the world I think that it's important to cross the Tasman every now and again to catch up with old school friends, early work buddies, and of course family. Facebook and email only do so much and there's no substitute for a good old fashioned catch up at your favourite restaurant or 'local', with a good glass of wine. www.southaustralia.co.nz …heading to the basketball. I love the basketball and my extended family are very passionate supporters. For the last few years Hunter's has been a sponsor of the Nelson Giants Basketball team – home games are hugely popular with my family and the team at Hunter's. www.giants.co.nz 154 | December/January 2012 | HER MAGAZINE
