pawsforthought A round-up of beastly facts and news from here and overseas. Celestial beasts A cow, a donkey and a myriad of excited dogs turned heads as they marched down Auckland's Queen St. Their final destination was St Matthews in the City for the annual SPCA Auckland Blessing of the Animals. Several hundred animals and their human companions packed out the central city cathedral in October, with the church organ and bagpipes just loud enough to be heard over top of the yapping over-excited pets. Louise Campbell, the manager of Dogs Trust Shrewsbury, said that more than 200 people had responded to the call for help and possibly a new home since the shelter - near the Welsh town of Newport - went public about the dogs' plight a few days ago. The African penguins, named Buddy and Pedro, formed a close bond while part of a "bachelor flock" at Pittsburgh's National Aviary. The penguins remained close when transferred to the Toronto Zoo, and displayed courtship and mating behavior towards each other. The zoo decided to separate the couple to breed the endangered animals and spread their good genes. Source: GlobalPost HER MAGAZINE | December/January 2012 | 129
