Pinch your plants Continue to pinch back all late summer and fall perennials to keep them bushy and healthy and to stagger blooming times. Go potty! Pot up containers. Early summer, after the threat of frost has passed, plant patio pots, window boxes, and hanging baskets with colourful annuals to add a splash of colour to entrances, decks, balconies and porches. Container-bound plants depend on you to keep them watered and fertilised as the summer progresses. Twilight trouble Watering at night is not advisable as it can cause the water to sit longer creating a damp environment for your plants, which can increase the chances of fungal growth. Mow more Lawns will need mowing at least once a week by now. It's always best to mow little and often so make sure that the blades aren't set too low for the type of lawn. Backyard supermarket Grow your own groceries. Plant warm seasonal vegetables and enjoy fresh home-grown produce. Plants, such as cherry tomatoes and peppers, and herbs, such as basil, can be grown in containers. HER MAGAZINE | December/January 2012 | 121
