her advertorial A passion for wine and business clearly shared Clearview Estate Winery co-owner, Helma van den Berg equates her business to a village, somewhere that people can eat and drink produce grown on the coastal property or from the close-by fertile Hawke's Bay plains, where visitors can take respite in accommodation set amongst the vines. This being the case, then Helma is definitely the matriarch, although she prefers village elder, nurturing and mentoring her people, guiding them to understand the Clearview culture and the passion that she and business partner, Tim Turvey have sustained since they planted the first vines together in 1989. Since then Clearview Estate has grown to a multi-dimensional operation; employing between 35 and 45 people over two companies that grow grapes and make award-winning wines, operate an iconic rustic restaurant that opens daily for lunch during the summer and for five days over the winter, and provide a sought after wedding and function venue along with boutique homestay accommodation. Despite the many, and often times conflicting, demands the atmosphere at Clearview remains calm, chilled even, a testament to the people that Helma and Tim have attracted to support them, many of whom are highly capable women thriving in the supportive environment, developing their roles around their individual strengths. Take Lisa Clarke – her passion for customer service saw her move from weekends at Clearview's cellar door, to slipping her CV to Helma when she heard that the sales rep position needed filling. Her enthusiasm and energy are huge; when told that in light of the recessed economy sales may be slow, her response was "bugger off, I'll double the sales". She has! The customer base is now far broader and she has since employed a sales assistant to maintain the level of service and relationships at the 110 percent standard she has set. Sacha van den Berg is her support person. Initially employed for four hours a day, Sacha, a qualified photographer, has since broadened her involvement to a full-time position, an amalgam of diversity: sales and marketing support with responsibility for advertising, in-house photographer, and managing the boutique accommodations. Clearview Homestead is the original Vidal family homestead that began life as a tobacco drying shed in 1915, and The Shearers' Quarters, was relocated from a local farm in the early 1990s. Sacha and Marta Black, restaurant manager, are repeat Women thriving at Clearview Estate Winery on the Cape Coast of Hawke' s Bay – from left, Sacha van den Berg, Helma van den Berg, Marta Black, Tina Hutchinson, Lisa Clarke. 'residents' of the Clearview 'Estate'. As teenagers both were water girls, polished glasses and waited tables, coming back to the fold during varsity holidays. Marta now holds a law degree but with almost 10 years of Clearview in her blood, was drawn back, joining full-time as functions and events manager in 2010. Her role has grown to include managing the restaurant and she's relishing the opportunity to advance both professionally and personally. And as a hopeless romantic, she loves organising weddings! She's also becoming the resident IT go-to person and webmaster. For mature student Tina Hutchinson, observing how the pieces of the Clearview picture fit together into a cohesive business has been a real asset in her studies in viticulture and winemaking at Eastern Institute of Technology. Employed part-time at the cellar door, mucking in on the vineyard and helping out in the winery, Tina loves the relaxed and inclusive atmosphere and believes visitors appreciate the unpretentious, easy Clearview environment. An ease made so by the collective efforts of people who love what they do. www.clearviewestate.co.nz
