Catherine Murray – Cruise Control, p. 18 contributors Having worked for many years as a medical writer and editor, Catherine branched out into the world of journalism. Working from her home office on Auckland's North Shore she writes about business, education and many other topics that come across her desk. As a child her answer to 'what do you want to be when you grow up' was 'a librarian', so her first job in a medical library was a pretty good start. Catherine is now enjoying watching her young sons grow up with the same love of books, although she's confident they would rather be rugby players than librarians! What goals are you setting for 2012? I am fortunate in my work to speak with a myriad of inspiring people, all of whom live full and enriched lives. My goal for 2012 is to really listen and see what inspiration I can draw from each and every one of them. And of course, I have my perpetual goals of eating better, exercising more and leading a calm and organised life! Richard Morgan – Valley Girls p. 34 A keen gardener, Richard is also an enthusiastic forager and manages the Waipara Valley Farmers Market. He edits the weekly market newsletter and is a member of Food for Thought. Richard has a love of good food and is dedicated to living a sustainable life with his wife and three boys. What goals are you setting for 2012? In the coming 2011/2012 season Margot Korhonen and I plan to launch a new local living magazine for the Hurunui District. I also intend to continue promoting the region and all its resources, especially the Waipara Valley, while encouraging others to live locally and sustainably. Trevor Garrett– Give a Little p. 50 Trevor Garrett is the chief executive of the Charities Commission, which he has led since 2005. As a volunteer, Trevor has been involved with the Auckland Hockey Association, and the NZ Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. He has been a youth hockey coach, is Patron of Physical Education New Zealand, and was inducted to the Wall of Fame at the Otago School of Physical Education in 2010. What goals are you setting for 2012? To encourage more people to make greater use of the Charities Register – whether you're looking for greater confidence when making a donation, or for facts and figures to support your research or policy making. We'll also assist other agencies working with charities – especially the External Reporting Board – whose planned new financial reporting standards and templates should make life easier for anyone doing the accounts for a charity, to make all charities' financial reporting more consistent. The public may also find it easier to compare charities' financial information, once the new standards are in place. Our other main focus is following up on our investigators' work, and making sure that charities aren't simply keeping their funding or being run as a business, and that they are using their money to actually do good works in our communities. "I believe this region has yet to reach its full potential as a centre of fine food and wine production, and I am excited about being part of its future growth," Kate McMillan, p. 34 "My interest became my addiction, as I slowly gained more knowledge and subjected my camera phobic kids to hours of practice." Karyn Flett, p. 102 "I think there's a danger in talking about it [work/life balance] as if it's this absolute place that you can get to where your whole life is really ordered, and you've got that image of balance with the kids and family on one side and work on the other, and it's all sitting there in happy equilibrium. I think it's a day by day proposition – actually it's hour by hour sometimes..." Ann Sherry, p. 18 HER MAGAZINE | December/January 2012 | 5
