Rudolphs Ltd had been sub-contracted to Ship Repair New Zealand and completed all the abrasive blasting and application of 4,000 litres of Carboline coating systems. Their work included the new mast and crow's nest, the underwater hull and topsides, the #1 fishwell, as well as sections of the engine room, wet deck and pipe alley. The extensive hydraulics required to drive winches and the various power blocks and haulers on the Carol Linda also required a complete overhaul and modernisation with new motors, winches and power block. In talking with Phil Cattin from McRaes Global Hydraulics Engineering Controls, he explained that once damage to the vessel's hydraulic system was assessed post mast failure and the options reviewed, the decision was made to install a new "Load Sense Ringmain System" as this would provide both cost and performance benefits over refurbishing the original "Fixed Displacement" system. Any option to reinstate the original system was going to be hampered by new regulations that restricted the placement of hydraulic lines or actuators over fishwells to avoid possible contamination of product in the event of a component failure.
