McMullen & Wing – masterworks
on the banks of the Tamaki
The HM5
A
n icon of the New Zealand marine industry, McMullen
& Wing is one of New Zealand's foremost ship yards.
Founded in 1969, the boat builders have been part of
New Zealand's world renowned maritime industry for over four
decades. Occupying a large site on the banks of the Tamaki River
in Auckland, the McMullen & Wing private marina has deep
water at all tides, a full slipway and travel lift, and ready access
from Waitemata Harbour.
Recent workboat projects have kept the team busy; the new
11.5m oil spill response vessel for Auckland Harbourmaster
and a substantial renewal project for Coromandel-based mussel
harvester Paddy Bull Ltd, including a combination of rebuild,
repair and maintenance on their five-vessel fleet of steel and
aluminium workboats. Currently McMullen & Wing is building
a 9m inboard diesel powered aluminium dive support boat for a
large research vessel and modifying a 15m aluminium fishing boat.
The facilities at McMullen & Wing are extensive for this kind
of work, with five construction halls in four separate buildings,
plus full engineering, electrical and joinery workshops, drawing
office and administration block. The company typically employs
around 100 full time staff, which means they can accommodate
projects from five to 50-metres or more, and multiple projects
concurrently. Their 300 tonne slipway is complimented by a
45-metre long high-stud shed dedicated to refit and repair work,
offering full cover for short term maintenance projects, enabling
faster turn around times and less risk of weather related delay.
Being located in an industrial area and with the benefit of long
term investment in facilities and up-to-the minute equipment,
McMullen & Wing's cost structure is undoubtedly more attractive
for repair and maintenance work than downtown or marina-based
facilities. Having all major trades in-house also reduces reliance on
potentially expensive external sub-contractors.
