FV PROSPECT
VIP.S95
and the Prospect carries a wide range of safety equipment
supplied by Southern Ocean Safety to assist in an emergency.
Not only do we note the four-man Zodiac liferaft secured in
its hydrostatically released cradle, there is a 406 EPIRB in the
liferaft along with other emergency supplies. The vessel is also
fitted with one of the new float free EPIRBs mounted on port
side of the wheelhouse adjacent to the access ladder to the roof.
This may be grabbed and activated by the crew when going
aloft, or it will automatically deploy once it has been submerged
two metres. There is stowage for the on board RHIB tender aft
and also in this area there are the two prescribed Maritime New
Zealand approved life rings and light; stowed in a cradle in a
position where they may float off in an emergency.
When working at sea the crew now wear the new inflatable
working vests that not only keep them warm, but may be
inflated as a life preserver if a crewmember should enter the
water unintentionally. To ensure that the alarm is raised, crew
now carry the new personal 406 crew EPIRB locator beacons.
This adds some comfort and further reinforces awareness of the
constant dangers and harsh conditions in which these fishermen
work in a very isolated part of New Zealand's coast.
In summary; "Tony Gough builds a bloody good boat," says
David, "but you get it his way or it's the highway."
There is no argument with this statement. Over the years
we have had the privilege of reviewing a number of boats
designed and built by Gough Bros. Each to their own, but each
is a finely constructed craft designed to withstand the rigours
of the prevailing southern ocean and providing years of active
service. They are boats designed for hard work and yet remain
a comfortable home for the crew. They are expected to handle
some shocking sea conditions and carry out the job of fishing in
amongst the rocks and cliffs while the six to eight-metre seas and
swells are running – and still deliver their crews and catch home
safely. These boats have the deserved reputation of being some
of New Zealand's finest workboats, a recommendation that
does not come lightly.
