Colourful façades rise above narrow streets, each building revealing the city's rich mercantile past. Small boutiques showcase Baltic amber in every imaginable form, from delicate jewellery to statement pieces glowing with warm honeyed tones. WHERE HISTORY FEELS PRESENT What ultimately distinguishes Gdańsk is not its beauty—it is its history. A visit to Westerplatte, where the opening shots of the Second World War were fired in September 1939, is deeply moving and provides a perspective that cannot be replicated by any textbook. The quietness of the site only amplifies its significance. A TASTE OF POLAND At a local restaurant, I was introduced to pierogi (Polish dumplings). It was the sort of lunch that reminds you that some of the best travel experiences are often the simplest. Sitting among locals, sharing food that has been part of Polish family tables for centuries. STORIES BEHIND THE MUSEUM WALLS Equally unforgettable is the Museum of the Second World War. It is immersive and thoughtful in its storytelling. Rather than presenting history simply as a series of dates and events, it focuses on the human experience behind them. One of the most striking exhibits is a reconstructed street complete with period shopfronts, allowing visitors to step directly into another era. Walking through these carefully crafted spaces creates an immediate connection to the lives that were lost, disrupted and forever changed by war. A CITY THAT LINGERS What I remember most about Gdańsk is not any single attraction, but the way the city told its story. There was the maritime history embodied by the Great Crane, the reflection inspired by Westerplatte, the beauty of the flower-lined waterfront, and the comfort of a traditional meal shared in good company. We often talk about destinations we'd like to revisit, but the reality is that there are so many places still waiting to be discovered. And yet, Gdańsk remains firmly on my return list.
