There are some destinations that exceed expectations, and then there are those rare places that quietly work their way under your skin. Long after you've returned home, you find yourself thinking about them unexpectedly—a street corner, a meal, a museum, a moment that resurfaces weeks or months later. FOR ME, GDAŃSK IS ONE OF THOSE PLACES Discovered on the Viking Homelands itinerary, this Baltic city delivered everything I love about travel: beauty, history, and authenticity. It surprised me at every turn, and by the time we sailed away, I already knew I wanted to return. ALONG THE MOTŁAWA The promenade itself is one of Europe's most enchanting waterfronts. Lining the river are beautifully restored merchant houses whose reflections shimmer across the water, while boats glide between the city's historic landmarks. Towering above the waterfront stands the Great Crane. Once one of the largest port cranes in medieval Europe, it remains a powerful symbol of Gdańsk's prosperity as a Hanseatic trading centre. As you stand beneath it, it is impossible not to imagine the bustling port that once connected this city to the wider world. A CITY IN BLOOM Along the Motława River Promenade, the waterfront was alive with colour. Fresh flower pots spilled from café terraces and restaurant entrances, softening the city's historic architecture with bursts of tulips, pansies and spring blooms. Locals lingered over coffee while visitors strolled the riverbanks, soaking up the first hints of warmth after winter.
