MELK ABBEY
Set amid the wine-growing region of the Wachau Valley, the charming riverside town of
Melk is home to the majestic 900-year-old Benedictine Melk Abbey, a spectacular example
of baroque architecture. Rebuilt in the 18th century after the original 12th-century structure
was destroyed by fire, the abbey stands as a testament to the resilience and cultural
significance of the Benedictine order in Europe. The abbey's beautiful library houses priceless
medieval manuscripts and marvellous frescoes by Paul Troger. The interior of the abbey's
church is a kaleidoscope of red, orange and gold, featuring a magnificent carved pulpit and
vibrant ceiling frescoes. The imperial rooms, now a museum, chronicle the abbey's history
from its inception to modern times.
