women to watch Jackie Smith Founder of Caci and Franchisor J ackie Smith is Caci's co-founder and also a Registered Nurse. Having been intimately involved in the business from the beginning, her knowledge of the appearance enhancement industry is substantial. "I love problem solving and systemising," she says. "Initially my passion was skincare, then it became about developing people in our business, and now I am thinking about what it takes to help small businesses be more successful. There are lots of books aimed at SME's and big businesses, but I am interested in the success of startups." Jackie has always had a natural inclination to systemise - a crucial skill she says to hone if you are to build a business that has value. "But learning to keep that systemisation as simple as possible is an on-going challenge," she explains. "Other people are the other big challenge. It is really only in recent years that I have come to understand the real importance of surrounding yourself with smart people who are able to deliver excellence. Business is a team game, and just like the All Blacks, you can't be a top team without having high performing players. I have had to learn that "that will do" is nowhere near good enough." Resilience is another important attribute to cultivate if you are in business, and Jackie knows that tough times are inevitable, in life and in business. "You just have to dig in, make a plan, and keep looking for the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm sure I am not the first person to observe that business equals problem solving." Once the business started making money soon after the first Caci clinic was launched in Newmarket, Jackie was approached by others wanting to copy the business model. It was then that she had to make a 42 WHO'S WHO 2013 choice about how to expand. Jackie has a passion for small business and a belief that the franchising model is an excellent way to increase the chance of business success. Jackie and her team have spent the last few years preparing the Caci franchise for export... "now we have to swallow hard and make it happen". "Franchising is a system where we can all benefit from a communal knowledge and expertise. I believe that franchising is an excellent example of a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts." Jackie says the greatest benefit of having your own business is the sense of achievement. "I find it hard to believe that something I started nearly 20 years ago is now a highly recognised brand in New Zealand, that provides jobs and business ownership for people nationwide." "New Zealand is a country that values ethics, fairness, egalitarianism and entrepreneurship. This makes it a very healthy environment in which to run a business. Could we do more to support small businesses? Absolutely. Successful small businesses are the foundation on which we build the New Zealand economy. Big business gets the profile and attention but it is small businesses that provide most of the jobs. It is small businesses that grow to be medium and large businesses. We need to provide the right education and support for those people who are brave enough to start their own business." With a strong belief in the benefits of on-going education and continuous learning, Jackie reads between 10 and 15 business books a year, in addition to subscribing to several business blogs. "Our team at Micromode is completely committed to continuously improving our systems and methods of doing business in order to increase the opportunity of business success for our franchisees and the standard of service to our customers. These books and blogs stimulate a lot of conversation with the team about what we can do better." This belief is also reflected in the high standard of education delivered to the Caci team through the Caci Academy in Auckland's CBD. In Jackie's opinion businesses can attract a higher caliber of employees/ franchisees by implementing good business practices. "You have to create an environment that high caliber people want to work in. This means, clear guidelines and goals, regular measurement and feedback, and some sense of control over their own destiny. We all want an opportunity to feel we can make a difference.
