WILCO MARINE SERVICES W ilco Marine Services have outgrown their previous premises and have moved to a new service centre at 28 Hamer Street in Auckland's Wynyard Quarter. Just next to the sprawling buildings of Titan Construction, Wilco have brought the serious business of liferaft service, sales and inflatable boat repairs to a new base close to the Westhaven industry. Work in the temperature and humidity controlled environment of the service centre is already underway. The catalyst behind the move was Wilco's recent contract for the servicing of the LSA-made MES escape slide system for the New Zealand Navy. Out on the work floor, a Positive Air System reduces fumes and dust and the timber floor surface is worker friendly and very clean – an important aspect of liferaft service. The Navy's escape slide awaits manual inflation for the annual servicing, the large canisters for its inflation in real-life emergency situations will not be used, these are tested and refilled every five years. The 21 metre escape slide is usually found aboard the Navy's multi-role vessel Canterbury, the only vessel large enough to require a slide for evacuation. The inflatable slide delivers crew into a 100 person liferaft, onto which smaller 50 person capacity liferafts are tethered. Wilco's three manufacturer trained and certified technicians are kept busy as they service a huge range of liferaft brands – from Zodiac to BFA, Pro Saver, Bombard and Arimar and Wilco Marine Services inflate the Navy's escape slide system to its full length of 21 metres more in between. Wilco also service personal locator beacons, lifejackets and immersion suits as well as carrying out inflatable boat repair. Wilco's operations manager Bernard Orme says that with their investment in the new premises in Westhaven, the Wilco service centre is now the cleanest and smartest in Australasia. With Superyacht Services moving into the office next door, Wilco's new corner of Wynyard looks set to create a whirring new hub for the marine service industry.
