Fast Fact
Because the platypus
doesn't have teeth, it uses
its rubbery bill to grind
food. It walks on its
knuckles when on land,
and swims with
its eyes, ears and
nose shut.
Platypus encounters
Visitors can take part in the world's first interactive platypus
show at Healesville Sanctuary. Watch the platypuses in
the unique riverside tank environment in the sanctuary's
new amphitheatre. Hear stories about adventures on the
waterways and learn how to help save the platypuses'
natural environment. The show, Tales from Platypus Creek,
is presented daily and is free after general admission.

Best of beaches
We know Australia has some beautiful
beaches, but now there's proof they're
among the best in the world. New
research by Tourism Australia says that
Australian travellers rate the country's
famous beaches higher than overseas
coastal destinations in Bali, Fiji and
Thailand. Andrew McEvoy, managing
director of Tourism Australia, says,
"The findings are proof positive that
our country offers some of the most
beautiful, safe and high-quality beach
holiday experiences in the world."
