BOOK S BEER IN THE BILGES Offers a fascinating glimpse into sailing in the Pacific when three men join forces and have to rely on their skills, wit, and most importantly each other, as they embark on an unforgettable nautical adventure. The book is set in the early 1980s; after the sexual revolution and before the explosion of the electronic age, when the remote islands of Polynesia were begging to be explored. What started as a delivery voyage, brings together three intrepid sailors from New Zealand, Australia and Canada. The book gives an insight into the dreams of many, as the three rogues dance across the Pacific from adventure to island, and back to adventure, with many lucky breaks and some serious near misses in between, in what can only be called, lifes a beach. This, and the watchful eye of what can only be friendly spooks, who have a habit of intervening when things go wrong, only to save the day. Like when, on what could have been a fateful voyage, lost at sea with raging storms and taking on serious amounts of water, they turn back to Pago Pago and safety, as the full force of a hurricane strikes the northern Pacific Published by iUniverse, Beer in the Bilges is available from all leading book stockists or Amazon. RRP $24.95 paperback. ebook $3.99. SHOREBIRDS OF NEW ZEALAND A beautiful, informative book by acknowledged ornithologist Keith Woodley, full time manager of the Miranda Shorebird Centre on the Firth of Thames. New Zealand shorebirds are prominent in our coastal landscapes, and on the beaches, harbours, estuaries, rivers and lakes around which many of us live. The author examines the lifecycles, habits and histories of these birds, such as the famous godwits, and red knots, of which some 30,000 reach New Zealand from Siberia annually. The Rednecked Stints (birds the size of a sparrow), make a similar journey. Begging the question: what drives these diminutive birds to make such great migrations annually? Then there are the snipes, stilts and oystercatchers, terns and gulls, dotterels and wrybills, and the author examines why many of these populations are in trouble. This book is worthy of a place in any home library, or as a gift to those who just like to wander the shores and watch the birds of the feathered variety. Published by the Penguin Group (NZ) Shorebirds of New Zealand is available from all leading book stockists with a RRP $50.00. fallen behind other comparable countries 40 years later.
