The fleet just prior to export The lazarette waterproof deck hatch effort to paint these vessels speaks heaps of company pride. They have a well proportioned and purposeful looking profile, painted in Internationals paint system, using type 990 in matching fleet colours with Akzo Nobel Tri-lux antifoul paint system below the surface. The painters have ensured that there is a good finish with a high level of attention to detail, matching the other vessels in their fleet. During our sea trials we found onboard noise was very tolerable with minimum vibration in the vessel. The manoeuvrability of the Hamilton-powered jetboat was excellent, as was to be expected, and once clear of the marina and speed restrictions, we quickly lifted to a respectable service speed in typical Auckland sou-westerlies of 20 to 25 knots. The deckhouse was comfy and cool and there is minimal noise with the door closed. The main helm station was well laid out with good side, and ahead vision. The port quarter blind spot behind the O FAB DT OU Y PRO PR PL P SU galley where the heads and the ladder to the fly bridge are, was not obtrusive. From the helm, there was still a clear view aft for when towing. The extensive electronic suite consists of the Furuno NavNet system, with Radar, GPS, chart plotter, sounder, VHF and AIS plus full engine electronic instrumentation and diagnostics displays, with all controls and switch panels easily at hand. Dropping down into the hull, accommodation is pretty utilitarian in its unlined state and facilitates the transmission of sea slap and water action noises into the boat. A heavy curtain at the companionway softens this noise in the deckhouse, suggesting that once this area is lined with frontrunner or similar, it will be a different space below. Up top the two conning positions allow for full flexibility and handling for when berthing in close, or when deck loading at sea. At service speed, the cat design quickly proved its seakeeping capabilities and that it is a relatively dry boat, punching the green spray away and down, leaving only the light, white stuff to be carried in the breeze. At this speed, by the time any spray thought about landing on the deck the boat was gone. Even if it did, these vessels have been designed with an open transom to make working on the deck easy and for free-flowing, total draining.
