Northland Sports Fishing Legend Honoured LEGENDARY NORTHLAND SPORTS fisherman, Snooks Fuller, was inducted into the Legendary Captains and Crews Hall of Fame of the International Game Fishing Association at a special ceremony at the associations Florida headquarters on February 16. Snooks is the third member of the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club to Snooks Fuller be inducted, after Alma Baker in 2006, and John Chibnall MNZM in 2012. The Fuller name is synonymous with the Bay of Islands, as Snooks grandfather started the iconic New Zealand marine business Fullers in 1886, delivering mail and supplies by boat around the Bay of Islands picking up cream from the various farms, which later became popular among tourists as the famous Cream Trip. The Fuller familys involvement in the marine industry meant that a marine career was always on the cards for Snooks. At 19 he designed and built his now famous, sports fishing boat Lady Doreen, using kauri from trees felled near Kaitaia and milled at Rangiahua. The timber was transported to Deeming Brothers boat building shed at Opua, where the Lady Doreen took shape and has become one of New Zealands best known sports fishing boats. She is still in use 61 years later. Snooks will be inducted alongside five US sports fishing legends: Captain Jimmie Albright, Captain Bob Lewis, Captain Frank LoPreste, Captain Gary Stuve and Captain Laurie Mitchell, who fished in the Bay of Islands with the American angler and writer, Zane Grey. FISH CONSUMPTION FALLS THE NORWEGIAN NEWSPAPER Aftenposten reports that fish consumption in that country has fallen from 38kg per person in 1999, to just 34kg in 2011. At the same time consumption of meat has increased from 36kg in 1953 to 75kg in 2011. Knut-Inge Klepp from the Directorate of Health said it is a paradox that fish consumption should fall in a country like Norway that has good access to fresh fish. However Callander McDowell report a decline in fish consumption across most of the developed world. In Japan, for example, consumption of meat has overtaken fish and the UK continues to show a steady decline. Norwegians are turning away from fish because their stores do not offer a good selection of fresh fish. Instead, their choices are mainly poorer quality frozen fish, as good fish gets exported. Aftenposten do not think the emphasis on exports is responsible for the fall in consumption, nor the lack of good fresh fish counters. They say the decline is part of a much wider trend in which the fisheries sector has failed to recognise the needs of new consumers who simply are not attracted to buying fish. They believe that the fisheries sector is too busy focussing on issues of sustainability rather than on what consumers want. They say that a time will come when all fish will be considered sustainable, because consumers will have turned away from fish making supply exceed demand and more. They question whether the fisheries sector be willing to face up to this challenge? Satellite Airtime, Fleet/Fleet Broadband, Iridium, SatC. ECDIS, ECS. PC Software.
