Five rental car insurance loopholes ORIGINAL BATMOBILE SELLS FOR $5M An Arizona man with a special fondness for the caped crusader, Batman, and his sidekick Robin, bought at auction the original Batmobile driven in the iconic television series with a bid of US$4.2 million (NZ$5m). Rick Champagne, a Phoenix-area logistics company owner, came away with the black, futuristic two-seater featured in the Batman series starring Adam West and Burt Ward from 1966 to 1968, following a flurry of spirited bidding at the auction in Arizona Source: Reuters Female car parks: Good HAVE WE HIT "PEAK CAR" WITHOUT EVEN NOTICING? It might be if we lose automakers to things that make appliances with four wheels. The threat of hitting that maximum amount of car usage globally should be a constant fear for automakers, many of which are staring death in the face in the aftermath of recession and the lack of vigour shown by the world economy. The question remains whether or not there's enough of a market for new cars for automakers, or if they need to prepare for a market where car ownership is not nearly as prevalent as it used to be. Your credit card might not include rental car insurance. There might be territorial exclusions. There might be limitations on certain types of roads. You must pay for the rental with your credit card. You must rent the right kind of car. Some shopping mall car park operators have decided to demarcate a "Female Only" zone that is reserved for solo female drivers, with additional security guards stationed there. As in most things Malaysian, this facility is rampantly abused where couples or families will drive into the car park, let out all the passengers at the entrance and the female driver will then nonchalantly proceed to the parking reserved for solo female drivers. Of course, the car park operator has neither the time nor the resources nor the inclination to vet all incoming car drivers for this abuse of their facility. Shopping malls with cinemas are more often than not targeted by criminals for potential victims, especially late night movie-goers as the shopping mall would normally be closed with limited exits which are normally through back alleys and/or poorly lighted routes. That's the premise for a program in the United Kingdom, where owners can turn in their gas guzzler and have tree groves planted in return. "Scrap Car, Plant Tree" is run by the UK non-profit organization Trees for Cities. The program offers restitution for the damage that cars do to the environment. Car owners can help repair the damage by having trees planted with the funds raised from the scrap metal or auction value of the vehicle. According to the website, "One scrap car plants about 13 trees on average while an auction car could plant a whole grove!" Source: autoblog.com www.h e rmagaz in e .co.n z | 69
