Nelson & Co: www.nelsonandco.co.nz 5 TOP TIPS Mixed floral china by pip studio from $23.50 For Creating a Functional Space 1. What is the space going to be used for? Is the area a kitchen, bathroom, living space or your office? This will determine what furniture, wall and floor treatments are needed for the room. 2. What is the current state of the space? Is it a complete do-up? Do the walls need a coat of paint or the furniture re-arranged or some art on the walls? This will help you formulate a plan to decide what work needs to be carried out to enable you to begin. 3. What will be the flow of travel? A very important consideration in a commercial setting versus a residential home. The way people will move through the space will help determine the layout of furniture and fittings. Cup and saucer by pip studio, $35.50 4. How are you grouping furniture? Create a 'story' of furniture, eg. Chair, side table and lamp means the space will be usable and serve a purpose. For a bedroom a bed, side table, lamp and dresser will complete a story. Even if a room feels bland, add a simple pop of colour with a bright cup and saucer on the bedside table ready for that morning cuppa! 5. Will the space have private and public spaces? Consider if you want to have any screened off areas in the space so that watching television, listening to music etc can be done without impacting on other people. To create an immediate change to the ambiance of a room, turn off the overhead light and turn on a lamp. Cup and saucer by pip lovebirds, $43 If all else fails get help!
