Real Journeys approached Advance Trident Limited, who already had a good working relationship with many of its other vessels. Simrad had just released some exciting new products in the Simrad NSE systems range and the black box version, the Simrad NSO. These systems gave ATL the unique ability to be able to accurately download all of New Zealand's lake edges, including Manapouri. These are not of chart quality and detail, but nevertheless they are very accurate as far as where the lake edge is in relation to the boat, and hence improve safe and accurate navigation. ATL supplied two Simrad NSO black box marine processors (navigational multi-function processors) with two Navpixel 19in multi-function LED IP-rated monitors. Both the processors were loaded with lake chart edge information. A Simrad OP40 wired remote control unit controls the NSO processors. Interfaced to the NSO processors via a Simrad NEP-2 Ethernet box is a 3G broadband radar, BSM-1 broadband echo-sounder, IS20 wind instrument and GS15 5Hz GPS antenna. This allows any function; radar, sounder, GPS chartplotter or wind data, to be on either Navpixel monitor. The NSO processors can also split the Navpixel screen into quarters if necessary so all the navigational data can appear on one monitor, offering great redundancy in the unlikely event that one monitor or NSO processor should fail. The Titiroa's remote working location meant faults have to be planned for in the system. "This was one of the criteria set by Real Journeys and the Simrad NSO system offers this," said Bart Meltzer from ATL. "Furthermore, we have included a Simrad RC42 rate compass. This allows extremely accurate and stable chart/ radar overlay, along with 10 targeted "mini-ARPAs (for radar-tracking other vessels)," said Bart. Also supplied was the Panasonic closed circuit colour television system, ICOM VHF communication, an Asus/Toa audio-visual system and an AI phone intercom. The various coatings used on the vessel incorporate a duplex approach, with International Marine Coatings and Devoe High Performance Coatings supplied by Akzo Nobel Coatings NZ Ltd. Real Journeys' commitment to preserving the local and global environment meant premium quality paints were a must. Akzo Nobel say that the hull system below the waterline, with Intersleek 970 non-biocide fluoropolymer foul release coating, benefits operators working in fresh water by reducing fuel consumption, engine operating temperatures and lower exhaust emissions. "An International/Devoe Coatings system was applied to the topsides providing long-term corrosion protection and hard-wearing long-lasting aesthetics." Up on the passenger decks, the white, blue and yellow décor and seating are practical, pleasing to the eye and have a friendly, open plan layout. The café facility is for'ard on the lower deck, with ample working room for staff and comfortable seating where passengers can enjoy coffee or snacks.
