To ensure that all deck hatches were watertight they chose the Lloyds approved Freeman deck hatches from So Pac. These hatches are recognised as remaining compliant and watertight, even when subjected to long periods awash. Unlike some RHIB designs, the Hypalon tubes are not part of the operational buoyancy of the vessel, but they do add to the ease of a recovery in heavy weather. And if a tube section is lost, the buoyancy integrity of the vessel is not compromised. The Hypalon tubes are constructed by Southern Pacific Inflatables in Auckland. AMF have used Southern Pacific on both the 11.7 boats built to date, and on nearly all their other RHIBs. Because AMF use detailed construction drawings, Southern Pacific are able to build the tubes, and then simply fly them to Wanganui for final fitting and to mark any extra detailing. They were also confident they could give a turn-key delivery in seven months so that Coastguard Taranaki could take delivery and be fully trained and operational for the summer season. AMF were cognisant of the units particular needs, and could build the one-off design that Coastguard Taranaki were wanting to meet Lloyds Register Special Service Vessel category (A) design. Although sister to a similar vessel in Hawkes Bay in part, she was significantly re-defined to meet the west coast conditions experienced at Taranaki. When asked about the Royal New Zealand Coastguard Federations preference for Naiad style vessels, we were advised that yes the Federation appear to have been locked into the Naiad production style vessel which may not have suited the units needs. In recognising this, the Unit was still eligible for 40 percent funding through the Royal New Zealand Coastguard Federation and Government funding, with the balance of funding coming from a local community partnership comprised mainly of Todd Energy, TSB Community Trust and a number of smaller community supporters. 09 448 5900 | info@sopac.co.nz 4 1 c W i l l i a m P i c k e r i n g D r, A l b a n y A u c k l a n d Protect Your Investment Engines, controls and air-conditioning systems are not compatible with salt-water!
