DARJEELING HIMALAYAN
RAILWAY – INDIA
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
is a narrow gauge railway that was
designed to take British colonial
exiles from the heat of the Bengal
plains to the cool, blissful heart of
tea plantation country. The line is
only around 80 kilometres long, but
it ascends to almost 7,000 feet into
the mountains. Construction began
on this historic and challenging line
in 1879 and was completed two
years later. These days, restored
vintage steam locomotives, similar
to the originals, pull the carriages.
