From heritage trains that hark back to a colonial past, to high speed marvels that
criss cross the continent, the iconic railways of Asia are the perfect way for travellers
to truly experience the local sights and culture.
BULLET TRAINS – JAPAN
Shinkansen refers to the dedicated
high-speed Japanese rail network
that provides a link to most major
cities on the islands of Honshu
and Kyushu. The name 'Shinkansen'
is also used to refer to the trains
that run on the network – which
are perhaps better known as
'Bullet Trains'. Renowned for their
punctuality, comfort and safety,
the trains are frequent, fast and
regularly run at speeds of up to
300 kilometres per hour. The trains
offer comfortable reclining seats,
large windows and there are
usually refreshment trolleys selling
snacks and beverages throughout
the journey.
WORLD'S HIGHEST RAILWAY
LINE – TIBET
The Tibet train, which travels from
Xi'an in China to the Himalayan
Kingdom's capital Lhasa, is the
world's highest railroad. Considered
an engineering marvel, the tracks
are built across permafrost land
around 4,000 metres above sea
level, with the highest point reaching
5,072 metres. Tanggula Station
is the world`s highest railway station
at 5,068 metres above sea level,
and the Fenghuoshan Tunnel is
the highest tunnel in the world,
constructed over permafrost at
4,905 metres above sea level.
