72 1 From heritage trains that hark back to a colonial past, to high speed marvels that criss cross the continent, the iconic railways of Asia are the perfect way for travellers to truly experience the local sights and culture. BULLET TRAINS – JAPAN Shinkansen refers to the dedicated high-speed Japanese rail network that provides a link to most major cities on the islands of Honshu and Kyushu. The name 'Shinkansen' is also used to refer to the trains that run on the network – which are perhaps better known as 'Bullet Trains'. Renowned for their punctuality, comfort and safety, the trains are frequent, fast and regularly run at speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour. The trains offer comfortable reclining seats, large windows and there are usually refreshment trolleys selling snacks and beverages throughout the journey. WORLD'S HIGHEST RAILWAY LINE – TIBET The Tibet train, which travels from Xi'an in China to the Himalayan Kingdom's capital Lhasa, is the world's highest railroad. Considered an engineering marvel, the tracks are built across permafrost land around 4,000 metres above sea level, with the highest point reaching 5,072 metres. Tanggula Station is the world`s highest railway station at 5,068 metres above sea level, and the Fenghuoshan Tunnel is the highest tunnel in the world, constructed over permafrost at 4,905 metres above sea level.
