LOG ON TO and Grab A Deal Healthy seasonal eating If you crave carbohydrates during the shorter, darker days of winter your body may simply be trying to make up for low serotonin levels – serotonin is one of our feel-good hormones Some scien- tists blame food cravings on falling Vitamin D levels, some on our pre-programmed survival genes. Sometimes it's just nice to curl up on the sofa with a warm bowl of carbs. So instead of bread and butter pudding with ice cream, treat your family to homemade apple crumble topped with low fat custard. Use canned apple or stew your own, add cinnamon and mixed spice for flavour. Serve it warm with a crunchy organic muesli topping. Make your own custard with trim milk and custard powder. Skip the added sugar and sweeten it with Stevia. Stevia is a plant-based natural sweet- ener. Healthy apple crumble is the perfect breakfast meal, so make a double batch and warm it up in the morning. It's also time to get out the slow cooker and fill up on healthy hearty soups and cas- seroles. In winter keep your immune system in top condition with a diet full of antioxidant rich fruit and vegetables. Vitamin D and pregnancy Recent studies have shown that Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy is a serious public health issue. According to a study presented at the Pediatric Academic Society's annual meeting in Canada, women who are pregnant should supplement with much higher levels of Vitamin D that traditionally prescribed. Taking Vitamin D during pregnancy is not only safe for mother and baby, but it can also prevent preterm labour, miscarriage and infections. The researchers concluded that a daily dose of 4000 IU's of Vitamin D per day produces the best outcomes. Most Vitamin D comes from the action of the sun on our skin. However, ex- cess sun exposure and sunburn can also cause skin cancer. This means we need to balance the risk of skin cancer against get- ting enough safe sun exposure for adequate Vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin with a hormone-like action, which supports healthy bones and immune function.
