Google-owned YouTube could see revenue from advertising increase by 40 percent or more from a year ago, according to Capstone analyst, Rory Maher. In an interview with AllThingsD. com columnist Peter Kafka, Maher observed that while YouTube has been attempting to persuade advertisers to move money budgeted for television to its site, which is increasingly offering original TV-like programmes, most of the new revenue that the video site is attracting is actually being moved away from other websites. "That's still a win for Google, but it's not the win it really wants," Kafka commented. Perhaps one of the reasons is that the quality of the programmes that YouTube unveiled at its own "upfront" pitch to advertisers recently looked crude compared with what is being pitched by the television networks at their upfronts, despite featuring name talent. "But if that doesn't bother the people who watch it," Kafka observed, "then it shouldn't be a problem for the ad guys, either." Source: Contactmusic • LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem ft. It rewards owners of most-watched clips by sharing profits from advertising that runs alongside their videos, or vlogs. The number of members earning more than $1000 each month has tripled in the past year. Source: NZ Herald 8 things you might not know about YouTube YouTube was created by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim in 2005. The three founders knew each other from working together at another Internet start up, PayPal. The domain name YouTube.com was registered on Valentine's Day in 2005. The name caused a huge misunderstanding for Universal Tube & Rollform Equipment based in Perrysburg, Ohio. Its company domain, "utube.com," was overwhelmed with traffic from people who tried to spell the video site's name phonetically. The first video to ever be uploaded to YouTube isn't a classic by any means. Shot by Yakov Lapitsky at the San Diego Zoo it shows co-founder Jawed Karim in front of the elephant enclosure going on about long trunks. It has, nonetheless, racked up a very healthy 4,282,497 views since its online debut on April 23, 2005. • • • • For the last three years YouTube has pranked its millions of users every April Fools Day. Google paid $1.65 billion for YouTube in November 2006. The longest video ever on YouTube is 48 hours (2 days!). The average YouTube user visits the site 14 times per month. www.hermagazine.co.nz | 21
