Dear Diary... Dear Diary… RECORDING ONE'S THOUGHTS AND activities through journal writing is an exercise centuries old, a practice for the benefit of your offspring to read and learn about their ancestors, and if you're like me for the writer's memory to be reminded of relapsed events. But the static art of journal or diary keeping is yet another practice falling victim to the internet's overhaul. Whatever happened to making a record and hiding it in a cave for people to find centuries later? Bring it back I say! The battle between the old and the new is as constant and sure as 'i' coming before 'e' except after 'c'. There will always be those who prefer the familiar practice of the written word – a tangible result from a physical effort – but with the ever-increasing digitalisation of the world and everything in it, technology savvy adventurers are taking to cyber space to digitally record what has traditionally been an intensely private medium. What has long been a person's nightmare is another's dream in today's society; having your every secret exhibited for the world to see, share and comment on. So surely those brave souls must have a purpose for their public revelations? Who puts their lives online with the intent that no one else will view it? Whether you're a celebrity with thousands of fans to keep updated or a school girl with a few friends to show off to blogging provides the way. A movie I came across recently (and thoroughly enjoyed) saw Julie (Amy Adams) cook her way through all 524 recipes from a Julia Childs (Meryl Streep) cookbook in 365 days and blog about her creations with the hopes it would lead to a successful publishing contract. In the end she achieved her goal. Yah! The film was the first major motion It's time to make a record of your day – do you turn to the keys or the ink? picture to be based on a blog, and although it didn't reach the records of novel-inspired films such as Lord of the Rings or Schindler's List it got across a good message. Much like Julie, bloggers everywhere are using this medium to their advantage. Have you had a stirring towards the treatment of battery-farmed chickens? Make it known! Blogging provides a great way to drive your opinion to a wider audience. Think of all the good you could do. But remember buyer beware! In my experience blogging can change a person. Not physically, but in terms of perception by the public. Think about the language you use – do you find yourself using words outside your everyday repertoire to make yourself appear smarter, funnier or more thuggish? Or do you tend to embellish stories a tad to impress your readers. Doing so could create an augmented reality or history of your life. Considering your audience is key with blogging are you writing for your own records and simply prefer a computer to a notepad? Are you making your blog private or making it viewable to nominated people? At the end of the day it comes down to what you're writing about. Do you want to get things off your chest or do you have a message to get across? Do you want to keep your family and friends updated on your whereabouts without writing 500 emails a day? Blogging may be the answer. But as for me, instead of depending on auto-correct I want my grandchildren to find comfort in the fact that their Nan was a terrible speller too.
