26 | Argentina In this fascinating country, the ghost of Eva Peron leans out of Parisian-style balconies in sophisticated Buenos Aires. Gauchos, the original cowboys, kick up the heels of their horses in the Pampas. European-Latin fusion and a zest for life mark the capital, where a lively arts scene vies with glorious gastronomy to headline as the essence of Buenos Aires. Yet step away from its cities, and this country is instantly trans- formed. It's here that explorers will find landmarks as unforgettable as Iguazú Falls, with its winding Devil's Throat and protected park. Patagonia is another, revered as a mecca of dinosaur digs. Fossil finds are easily commemorated in Bariloche—the "party capital of Patagonia"—with a glass of Malbec or Merlot, two of the most notable Argentine varietals. Although it is Mendoza that produces 70% of the country's wines, the western province still bears resem- blance to its neighbor for its own "Triassic Park." At Kilometer 8, keep a lookout for Huemul Island from Playa Bonita; then, travel six more miles to reach Campanario Hill. A chairlift ride to the top of the hill lets you take in an impressive view of this region before leaving the San Pedro Peninsula behind for Llao Llao Peninsula, its namesake hilltop hotel, and the San Eduardo Chapel. Finally, visit Panoramic Point for a magnificent view of Moreno Lake and the peninsula. EL CALAFATE Perito Moreno Glacier Tour Pleasant surprises are a signature of this tour, from the black-necked swans, flamingos, gallaretas, and cauquénes to the lake of El Calafate and its Round Bay. Travel through the Andean Patagonic forests to the highlight of the tour, the Perito Moreno Glacier, from within the National Park, and use the numerous footbridges to catch different views of this landmark. IGUAZU Argentinian Side Falls Tour A pick-up from your Iguazú area hotel transports you to Iguazú National Park, one of the first protected areas of the Americas. A huge variety of ferns, orchids, begonias, birds, and butterflies decorate the way to some of the 275 falls that drop from an astounding 230-foot average height. Two options to the Cataratas Upper and Lower Circuits include the 1,969-foot-long pedestrian trail, Sendero Verde, or a train ride that goes through Estación Cataratas and/or Estación Garganta del Diablo.
