71 4WD ADVENTURES 71 KIMBERLEY CHALLENGE Traverse the rugged beauty of the Kimberley Day 3. Bell Gorge Hike (Difficulty: Hard, Distance: 7-9km, Duration: 6 Hours). Back on the Gibb River Road, travel to Bell Gorge, where stunning cliffs surround a series of tiered waterholes. Today's walk takes you to the three separate sections of the famous Bell Gorge. Set in the King Leopold Range National Park off the Gibb River Road, it covers more than 900,000 acres and featuring seven rugged ranges. Bell Gorge is the most spectacular of its gorges. The first section of the walk is approximately 2 kilometres from the car park to the top of the falls. It leads you down an uneven path and through a creek bed with river rocks. The second section of the walk leads you over the river and down the far wall of the gorge. Here, there are times when you will need to clamber down boulders, along with rock hopping. The third section of the walk contains some walking through long spinifex grass, that leads you to the lookout at the furthest point of the gorge. It is a breathtaking view of a beautiful waterfall and the river cutting through the ranges. Enjoy dinner back at your lodge this evening. BLD Day 4. Manning Gorge Hike (Difficulty: Hard, Distance: 8-9km, Duration: 4 Hours). After breakfast, bid farewell to your wilderness lodge as you travel through the heart of Kimberley cattle country to discover some of the region's most secluded gorges. At Manning Gorge, commence with a river crossing where you can choose to swim through the crystal clear waters, or choose to go across in the boat with the manual pulley system. It is a long walk that is often rather flat and easy traversing in certain areas, although it does become rocky, uneven and uphill towards the end. What awaits at the conclusion is one of the most powerful gorges and waterfalls of the Kimberley that can span up to 50 metres wide in full flow. Enjoy lunch here before a swim, or even explore the gorge to find some of the Indigenous rock art. Turn off the Gibb River Road and travel north on the Kalumburu Road towards the isolated Mitchell Plateau. Later, arrive at Drysdale River Station and enjoy a unique stay at this historic cattle property, including a delicious dinner. Stay: Drysdale River Station. BLD Day 5. Mitchell Plateau, King Edward River, Bradshaw Art (Gwion Gwion). Travel up the Kalumburu Road towards the isolated Mitchell Plateau. Ascending the Mitchell Plateau, explore the Wandjina and Gwion Gwion art galleries. The Kimberley's rock art is arguably some of the world's oldest, with evidence suggesting the earliest occupation in the region dates back 50,000 to 60,000 years ago. Swim in the clear waters of the King Edward River. For the next two nights, stay at our Mitchell Falls Wilderness Lodge located at the top of the plateau, which is perfect for wildlife watchers. The Wunambal people welcome visitors to Ngauwudu (Mitchell Plateau). Situated close to Mitchell Falls, this lodge is the ideal base for exploring some of the Kimberley's most unforgettable attractions. Your accommodation is perfectly positioned beside the Pandanus palm-fringed Camp Creek, where you can enjoy a refreshing dip. In addition, enjoy the facilities of the lodge's new Ungolan Pavilion, where you can relax in the lounge, treat yourself to a drink or read up on the local culture. Two Night Stay: EXCLUSIVE! This evening, enjoy dinner at your leisure before your fascinating journey into the Kimberley commences. Stay: Broome, Cable Beach Club Resort & Spa. Day 2. Gibb River Road, Tunnel Creek, Windjana Gorge. Your day starts with a visit to the fascinating Boab Prison Tree. Believed to be more than 1,500 years old and measuring an incredible 14 metres in diameter, this remarkable tree was once used by early police patrols as a standing point for prisoners as they were walked to Derby. Today, the hollow tree is a registered Aboriginal site of great cultural significance. Continue your journey along the Gibb River Road, a remote 660-kilometre outback highway stretching between Broome and Kununurra. The Gibb traverses the wild heart of the Kimberley, passing spectacular landscapes of intensely coloured ranges, dramatic gorges, deep rock pools and spectacular waterfalls. Turn off the Gibb River Road to the extraordinary Tunnel Creek, a 750-metre-long natural tunnel carved through the Napier Range. With torch in hand, wade through the cool waters that fill the tunnel and emerge on the other side to the sight of a tranquil and stunning oasis. Continue to Windjana Gorge, where sheer cliffs tower above white sands. Admire the ancient marine fossils embedded in the gorge walls and scour the banks for a glimpse of the freshwater crocodiles that laze on the shores of the Lennard River.
